Huge Happy Tails Alert!

After 8 long years on the streets after being left behind when her owner moved when she was just 2 years old, Flounder, now 10 years old has finally found her forever home and her Happily ever after.

A very special thank you to Dani and Ryan who fostered Flounder and showed her how to trust and accept love again in a safe environment.

Our biggest thank you goes out to Marianne, Flounder’s new mom. Thank you, Marianne, for not only choosing to adopt, but for adopting a senior pet. We know Flounder is in loving arms now and will never be abandoned again. Happy life little one.

Happy Tails from Moochie

Moochie was found somewhere in Plainview by a kind gentleman. Despite all efforts, the previous owner could not be found. She was so sweet and friendly that it was hard to believe someone would just put her out there.

After arriving in our habitats at Doggie Don’s, it did not take long before a great application came in for her.

All of our volunteers loved her of course and we were all so happy to see her go to a great family who will make sure she never has to worry about being homeless.

We wish Moochie and her new family from Northport all the best and thank our wonderful volunteers at Doggie Don’s and our fosters, the Kumar family for taking extra special care of Moochie during her brief stay with us.

We have many other sweet cats and kittens still waiting for a loving family of their own. Please be sure to share their stories with your own communities so we can find great homes for them.

Pairs/siblings/best friends forever

Maybe the thought of separating a pair to some is ok… but the volunteers at Northport Cat Rescue who foster these pairs for months sometimes, feel otherwise. Yes, there are times we decide - you know what? It’ okay to separate a pair. Maybe they really don’t depend on one another. Maybe a loving family will make up for the void. But then there are those Special Duos that we foster and we see - to separate them would hurt. To separate them would be like losing your partner.. your husband… your wife… your brother…your sister… your best friend…your child. The one that makes you feel safe and loved. Not that they don’t want human companionship…but you catch them curled up together… or cleaning each other… or playing… or sitting next to each other looking out a window and you just know… they need each other.

So here are some of our dynamic duos… that ended up in our rescue by no fault of their own…

If you have it in your heart to adopt 2

Here they are…

1st 2 pics- Herme and Clarisse- 3-4 years old- siblings fostered with love as babies adopted and returned because of an “allergy”

Petunia and Lulu - 13 years young- together all their lives- lost Mom to Covid.

Robin and Misha- just kittens still - no interest at all at any adoption events- love each other immensely

Last 2 pics Daisy and Minnie- 8 years young- sisters raised in a Hoarders home- recently rescued when owner passed away- Daisy fiercely protects Minnie - both sweet and innocent.

The arrival of Minnie & Daisy

It happens all too often. Loved ones end up in a nursing home, or pass on. It’s part of life. The beloved pets are left behind, usually with no plan in place.
A majority of our rescue cats come from our local communities, but on occasion we end up helping a furry friend out of town. As it is the case for Minnie & Daisy.
We were contacted for assistance when their owner was placed in a nursing home. A kind neighbor went into the house to care for pets left behind, two cats and a small dog. When it was understood the owner was never to return, the neighbor found a home for the doggie and took Minnie & Daisy in until a rescue could come through.
When we agreed to assist, they made their journey from CT on a ferry to Port Jefferson where our Director Lora was waiting for them. She took them to her home to foster and evaluate. While they were observed to be extremely friendly each time the neighbor visited them in their own home, Minnie & Daisy had been very unhappy in his home.
Lora was nervous.. how were they going adjust in her home, what if they are not friendly, what if they’re not adoptable.
Once we commit to a cat, we never give up you see. It’s a very big responsibility to accept a cat to the rescue.
They arrived safely in Lora’s house, the foster room, (use to be a mudroom long ago), as all rescues do when she takes them in.
Eager to make them feel at home and welcome, give them all the love they’ve been missing out on, she attempted to make first contact.
She got scratched. Daisy was the protector as it turns out. She doesn’t know you, she doesn’t know your intentions.. “What are you doing? Don’t you dare touch Minnie!”
Now what?!
After a consult with another director, it was decided, the scratch means nothing. Consider what these cats have been through. Trauma after trauma, all the while the dreaded unknown, what does the future hold? “Where is our owner? What will happen to us? Who are all these people? Why are we leaving the only home we know? Where are we? Where are we going?”
It’s impossible to know for sure what they’re thinking, but we do know they’re sad, scared, worried, all along the way. It’s not that hard to imagine.. not so different than when a child is left an orphan. Trusting is not easy.. after all, not everyone in the world has the best intentions. Appearing tough is the next best thing, to make sure one survives. Worrying about yourself is one thing, it’s even more difficult when you worry for a sibling.
So poor Daisy decided she would protect both of them and clearly was exhausted from such heavy burden on her shoulders.
Thankfully, foster Lora has the gentlest heart. The next time she went in there channeling that energy, all will be well, and we will wait as long as it takes, Minnie & Daisy understood.
It was all petting and purring from then on. Poor Daisy, finally able to relax, took the nicest nap while Minnie got all the love she had been craving.

We don’t know what the future holds but we know they’re in good hands now and we will work very hard to secure them a great home.

Please follow their journey and share with your own community to help us help them.

Thank you!

Moochie was found as a stray - friendly and begging to get into anyones home in a neighborhood for food and to keep warm.

She is now at Doggie Don’s in Northport loving all her visitors but not loving being in a cage so if you are looking for a new member to your family- to make you laugh and smile every single day- come visit her and go to our website and fill out an application at

A journey of three little kittens

Born in a Huntington Station backyard, they came to us in the back of a pick up truck, of all things. They were about four/five weeks old at the time, and scared as can be as you can imagine.

We placed them in our rescue cottage until one of our fosters became available.

Foster Lisamarie at first, then Foster Katherine.. they all took awesome care of these sweet kittens and showered them with so much love. Modesto, Sonia and Maria, now fully vetted and socialized, waiting eagerly at Petco Commack for an awesome family to take them to their furever homes.

Please visit our their page to learn more about them and to complete an adoption application.

We’d be happy to arrange a visit for you to meet Modesto and his sisters.

A long journey complete

Happy Tails!!

Home for the holidays at last!!

The long journey, six months to be exact, from being found helpless, sitting on the side of a road from buckshot injuries by cruel people, to being rescued and given extra love and care by our organization and most compassionate fosters, these awesome boys Julius & Sydney, and their sister Bessie who was previously adopted, to also get adopted by a loving family is finally complete!

We couldn’t be happier for all of the boys in the photos!

We wish them all the best!!

We thank Hausch Family for always saying “yes” whenever we call on them for a challenging post, and all of our volunteers at Petco Commack and Huntington stores for taking great care of Julius and Sydney during their stay in our habitats.

Home at last

Some cats have to wait a long time for their happy ending. That was the case for poor Howie.

He was found as a friendly stray in Islip when we got the call for help.

That was back in February. He was adopted twice and returned twice, though he was a great cat, neither was the right home for him.

One of our fosters who had recently lost one of their long time furry family member, who passed away from old age, heard of Howie’s misfortune. Something about him touched their heart, and they decided to adopt Howie.

Goes to show you how sometimes bumps on the road are a necessary part of the journey, though it’s impossible to see it at the time.

Frombergs are the best family any cat could have asked for.

Now called Negan, Howie is finally home.

We are grateful to all of our volunteers, especially Foster Al for taking awesome care of Howie Negan during his journey with us, and wish Howie Negan and his new family all the best. 😻🙏😇

A jolly day at the rescue

Handsome boy Chester got adopted today by a very awesome family from Kings Park! Director Lora said she has never seen a cat hug a person the way Chester hugged his new daddy. They were sad to leave beautiful Baby the tortie behind still waiting for adoption. So sad that they came back and adopted her also a couple of hours later.

Like Samantha & Tabitha, sweet sister who were adopted earlier today, Chester and Baby were also rescued as homeless cats in Brooklyn.

Needless to say, it was a very merry day today at Northport Cat Rescue. We forget all of the challenges and struggles of operating a rescue on days like this. From being homeless strays in the streets of Brooklyn, seeing these sweet kitties in the loving arms fill our hearts with so much hope and joy.

We wish them and their new family all the best and thank our wonderful volunteers for taking such a good care of Baby and Chester during their stay with us and to our sponsors as without their support, we could not do what we do.😻🙏

Please consider becoming a monthly contributor and/or a volunteer of our organization so that we may continue to do our work to help our helpless furry friends. 😻🙏

Mika and the Kumars

Our brand new Foster Family, the Kumars are making great progress with Mika. Be sure to follow them on Mika’s page on our website. We are so happy for Mika and grateful to the Kumar Family for going above and beyond to make sure Mika is well on her way to recover from the trauma of being homeless.

“As we enter morning number 4, Mika exhibits huge progress towards all her goals. Her trauma therapy sessions, though very difficult and emotionally painful have enabled her to understand the concept of perception. By tweaking her perception and placing a positive spin on her past distressing events, Mika now understands that it’s these events that have led her to the life she now has and the future that awaits her. She is very grateful and once fully stabilized, plans on paying it forward with constant and unconditional love towards anyone she comes in contact with.” Foster Cindy

This is my first kitty experience and wow, it’s amazing!!!

Happy Tails! Lilo & Stitch are Adopted!!

Happy Tails!! Lilo & Stitch are adopted!!

We are super happy to say Lilo & Stitch are adopted! They were rescued in Selden as tiny little kittens and were fostered by the Hausch family and their family cat Winnie, with love.

It took a lot of care to earn their trust. Many many snuggles and hugs. We are lucky to have such wonderful foster families, and especially happy to know the torches of love and compassion for the helpless cats in our communities will be carried on by the next generations.

Trinity and Faith are two of our many awesome teen volunteers. Pure hearts full of love and their energy and enthusiasm is a continuous source of inspiration to their elders in the organization.

Thank you to our amazing volunteers at Commack Petco who go above and beyond to make the kittens’ transition to the habitats tolerable as we know no cat wants to be held in a habitat and non of us at the rescue get any pleasure in placing them there. Alas, it is a way to eventually find those who will fall in love with them.

We wish all the best to Lilo and Stitch on their new journey and so happy for their new family who will give them lots of love and receive endless joy from Lilo & Stitch.

Lilo & Stitch.. Special Play Date

AD04568A-1226-4A00-84B5-D22CA5CA90FD.jpeg

Our fosters grow very attached to their babies and miss them terribly when the inevitable day comes and they get separated.

It’s one thing when they get adopted, another when they are placed in the habitats in a store. Once roaming freely around a loving home, now confined to a small place, it’s not easy to not to get sad.

Even though our cats are visited with our wonderful shift volunteers, twice daily, they are super excited to have a special visit from their foster family.

The Hausch family is no exception. They went to visit Lilo & Stitch today and clearly it was very appreciated.
